Americans love their coffee. Whether it’s that refreshing morning cup or a re-energizing one in the evening, millions of us drink it every day, making it a major staple in our diets.
In 2016, more than half of the American population— roughly 150 million people—aged 18 or over consumed coffee daily. The types of coffee Americans prefer may vary, but as a whole, it is found that we prefer coffee over tea. Nothing beats the aroma and taste of a good cup of coffee for us—not even tea.
But why is this so? What makes the average American prefer this drink over all others?
A short history
In 1773, during the time the United States was a British Colony, some protesters tossed a shipment of British Tea overboard to show their opposition to the tax law at the time. This event became known as The Boston Tea Party.
The US president of the time, John Adams, then started to renounce tea and regarded it as the “traitor’s drink.” From then on, the people united and decided to drink coffee in their homes and gradually, people started to link coffee with the Revolution. The boycott of tea lasted until the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783, and by then most people had already begin to develop a taste for coffee.
Coffee has a dynamic nature
Coffee is a dynamic drink that encompasses a wide array of flavors and aromas. You can choose from the Classic Americano to a more flavorsome choice and you never really run out of choices. Most coffee shops have a wide variety of different types of coffees, and you’re free to choose what your taste buds love the best! Coffee can also be decorated in a number of beautiful ways, unlike tea, and barista art has gained increasing popularity over the years.
It’s more energizing
They say that three cups of tea makes for one cup of coffee. Coffee is strong; it immediately lifts your spirits and gets you on your toes. This can be another factor behind millions opting for this drink over tea.
It’s great for your health!
Coffee has been believed to increase our lifespan as it helps in reducing the risk of blood pressure, cancer, and heart problems. It also helps in delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s and diabetes.
In conclusion, we can say that perhaps the reasons Americans prefer coffee over tea extend to its history as well. Sure, it has numerous benefits, but the history and tradition of the drink have made us fond of it as well and influenced our choice of drink.
