World cultures that might not have anything in common on the surface share one aspect of daily routine and that’s drinking coffee.
Java is truly a global phenomenon. It has been one of the favorite beverages of people in all corners of the world for centuries. According to the International Coffee Organization, the average monthly global coffee exports in 2019 are approximately 10.16 million bags.
While people of all cultures share the same love for coffee, the way it’s consumed, and when it’s consumed does differ.
Let’s have a look at the coffee culture around the world.
United States of America
According to statistics, Americans consume more than 400 million cups of coffee every day, making the country the biggest consumer of the beverage in the world. People in the U.S start their day with a freshly brewed cup of coffee. Chains of coffee shops such as Star Bucks and Dunkin’ Donuts have become a significant part of the daily street life in the United States.
Mexico
Mexico has a big coffee culture, with the beverage being served throughout the day. The authentic Mexican coffee is called ‘café de olla,’ and it’s brewed in earthenware pots with sticks of cinnamon jammed into it. The drink has a spicy flavor that leaves your taste buds wanting more.
Italy
Coffee drinking habits in Italy differ significantly from those in the U.S, especially when it comes to Espresso. People in the U.S consume the drink in large cups, while in Italy; it’s served in small ceramic cups which are gulped down in single shots. Moreover, for an extra bang of flavor, lemon is rubbed on the edge of the cup.
Saudi Arabia
In Saudi Arabia, coffee is considered a luxurious drink, enjoyed mostly by those who come from wealth. The people of Saudi Arabia follow a serious etiquette when consuming the beverage. It’s served from the eldest to the youngest; men drink it with men and women drink with women. Sweet dates are served with coffee to balance out the bitter flavor.
Turkey
According to an old proverb, Turkish coffee is “black as hell, strong as death and sweet as love.” Who wouldn’t want to try this beverage at least once in their lives? And although it might sound a little intimidating, coffee in Turkey is consumed as a type of dessert. It’s served after dinner and is consumed by people while it’s absurdly hot!
